On 14 June 2023, the European Parliament approved the new Battery Regulation with the aim of regulating a fundamental sector in the transition towards sustainable mobility and energy generation. Its official publication is expected within a few weeks following its ratification by the European Council.

The Regulation execution will be completed in the coming months with the publication of  around 50 Implementing and Delegate Acts to be added to the approximately 350 pages of the Regulation, providing a legal basis of absolute value and unprecedented certainty for the entire sector.

The Regulation was drawn up with the aim of covering all aspects relating to batteries, such as for example the CE marking or the introduction on the label of performance classes such as those we see on household appliances. The obligation for manufacturers to verify and certify that the entire supply chain complies with the requirements will also be introduced and minimum targets will be set for the recovery of materials (for example lithium and lead) and their use in the production of new batteries. Regarding this aspect, starting from 2031, for lead-acid batteries, new products placed on the market will have to contain at least 85% recycled lead, while for lithium batteries this limit is 6% in 2031 to rise to 12% in 2036.
FIAMM Energy Technology S.p.A. follows the new Regulation carefully and has undertaken a series of actions in order to guarantee compliance with all the requirements within the required times, in particular with regard to environmental aspects. As proof of this, to date, for the production of batteries in its factories, the company already uses over 80% recycled lead, anticipating the requirements that will be placed in the Regulation.
